Object Description

The stylish Regency period solid burr walnut and ebony sofa or centre table having a three section solid burr walnut top to a scroll flanked frieze with ebonised panels over a part solid ebony and part ebonised beech under frame with bullseye roundels and turned unifying stretcher to four bun feet, the whole surviving from the first quarter of nineteenth century England.

Object History

Unknown.

Object Literature

The influences on Regency design and taste were legion; from Sheraton’s neoclassicism, Henry Holland’s Anglo-French taste, the Greek revival of Thomas Hope, and the Chinoiserie favoured by the Prince Regent, to an interest in the Gothic, Old English and rustic. The Regency attitude to interior decoration often involved treating each room as a unit with individual furnishings and wall decorations in harmony of theme or colour scheme.

This high-quality table could happily be used as a centre, sofa or console table and when Regency pieces are as good looking as this one they can slide into any interior from 21stC luxe to smart period townhouse; splendid.

Object Condition

The condition of the table is good overall with a lovely glass like surface to the burr walnut top and expected wear to the extremities. There are few small sections of nibbled loss to some mouldings and a little side-to-side movement in the joints, which one would expect from a table constructed in this way. We have given the piece an oil and wax treatment to bring out the patina.
