A Fine Regency Period Tilt-Top Centre Table
Attributed to George Oakley
Constructed from rosewood, with brass inlay and ormolu mounts, supported on castor-shod brass-capped cabriole legs dressed with acanthus foliate mounts meeting the tapering square pillar supporting the tilt mechanism top with a distinctive star-inlaid border.

George Oakley (c.1760-1840) was a prominent cabinet maker based in London during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. His firm, known as George Oakley & Co., produced stylish furniture in the Grecian style and was renowned for its craftsmanship. Oakley’s furniture often featured fashionable materials such as rosewood, mahogany, and coromandel, combined with inlays of satinwood and ebony, as well as brass stars and bands of metalwork. He gained a royal appointment, a reputation for fine craftsmanship and his showroom attracted a discerning and fashion-conscious clientele. The firm received visits from members of the royal family, and Oakley’s reputation extended beyond London, with his furniture being sought after by customers with taste both in England and abroad.
