A Fine Set of Four George II Style Walnut Armchairs with Original Needlework Upholstery, c.1920
The chairs are of broadly “compass-back” form with shepherds’ crook arm supports that join the side rails and cabriole legs, which are of finely flowing form with pad feet. The front knees on each chair have restrained central strapwork carving. Made in the 1920s, at the time when many important collections of antique English furniture were being formed under the guidance of the likes of R. W. Symonds and Percy MacQuoid, these chairs were probably made by one of a number of dealers of that period who sold both antiques and high quality reproductions, such as Gregory and Co., Lenygon and Morant, Litchfields, etc. The proportions of the chairs are a little wider than is commonly seen on period chairs, making them rather more comfortable when used. Our chairs retain their original high quality gros and petit point needlework upholstery, which adds considerably to the elegance of the design and is on an unusual ground colour which harmonises beautifully with the patinated walnut. A fine suite of chairs.
