Object Description

The clock and its accompanying candelabra constructed in gilt bronze mounted Italian Carrara marble; the timepiece with stepped elliptical base rising from toupie feet, dressed with running rinceaux garlands, swags and jewelled torsades; the lyre frame housing a barrel cased floral decorated enamel faced clock, the hours in Arabic numerals, signed ‘Causard / Horloger du Roi’ and having an eight day movement, chiming on a bell; the lyre surmounted with a mask of Apollo emanating sunburst rays; the pair of candelabra similarly supported on toupie feet and Carrara bases, supporting a tripod vase mounted with ram’s heads and issuing three foliate modelled branches with rose-petal cast candlecups.

This clock design is taken from Dieudonné Kinable et Dubuisson, and the original Louis XVI model by Jean-Charles Ponchon is to be seen in the New York Frick Collection.
