Object Description

English, Circa 1740

A distinguished George II walnut centre table with a superb Calacatta Breccia marble.

The table is of bold architectural form and exceptional decorative character. The frieze is veneered in finely figured walnut with a mellow, lustrous patina, centred by an elaborately carved apron featuring a stylised fleur-de-lis motif issuing into scrolling acanthus ornament.

The corners are enriched with pronounced scrolled ears, adding depth and sculptural movement to the design. Raised on elegant cabriole legs carved with bold acanthus ornament over the knees and with pronounced scrolled ears, adding depth and sculptural movement to the design.

The carving continues fluidly down the legs and terminates in finely carved and acanthus adorned ogee pad feet. The confident carving, dynamic silhouette and richly figured walnut exemplify the sophistication and exuberance associated with the finest English furniture of the George II period.

A highly decorative and refined table, combining masterful carving with an exceptionally dramatic marble top of great visual presence.
