Object Description

A truly delightful George II period silver tray, made in London by Dorothy Mills, later Sarbitt, of Saffron Hill in 1752.

Its quality and heavy gauge are confirmed by the weight of 9ozs 2dwt for a size of 7.5”. 19cm overall diam. The border is as elaborate as could be wished for, centred by contemporary armorial bearings engraved within an asymmetrical cartouche, most fashionable at this period. This piece reveals a fascinating insight into the life of an 18th century lady silversmith registered at Goldsmiths’ Hall as a largeworker i.e. a maker of dishes and candlesticks. Dated 1752
