Object Description

A George V silver presentation salver for The King’s Royal Rifle Corps, (60th Regiment of Foot), of circular form with a gadrooned border, raised on four claw and ball feet, the centre with a regimental badge with a Peninsula War battle honour and five facsimile signatures. Hallmarked for The Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Co, London, 1915.

The signatures are of five young officers, who were attached to the King’s Royal Rifles in 1915/16 on a course of instruction, and on leaving, presented this salver to the Officers Mess. They were Hal Verelst, (Coldstream Guards), killed in action in September 1916 at the Battle of Lesboeufs, Arthur F. Smith, (Coldstream Guards) went on to be Chief of Staff, Army Headquarters, India, Charles Loyd, (Coldstream Guards), Chief of Staff to Lord Alanbrooke and ADC General to King George VI, H.A. Sutherland (Black Watch) went on to be Deputy Lieutenant of Peeblesshire and John Noel, (King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry) taken prisoner and held at Stalag IV-DTorgau Prisoner of War Camp, Leipzig.
