Object Description

The quality carcass with low scroll back and sprung seat being button-backed and upholstered in the original chocolate aubergine leather and sitting on well-turned ebonised front legs to rear oak sabres, to brass castors and surviving from Edwardian period England and a Northamptonshire country house.

Object History

A Northamptonshire country house.

Object Literature

Chesterfield sofas share a complex history, alongside the elite, the privileged and aristocrats. History reveals that these types of couches have been commonly used in the confines of old institutions, government buildings and luxurious homes for generations. A room, in the 1900’s, would not be complete, unless the master owns a Chesterfield sofa.

A high quality example which is so comprehensively Edwardian and encapsulates all that is the glory of the English country house.

Object Condition

The leather upholstery is supple and in good overall order considering it is the original fabric and it proves nicely worn with a handful of minor blemishes and stains as per the photographs, and with about four patched tears which we have repaired well so they now appear as merely battle scars. The reverse panel is rexine so that has been replaced art some stage and that has a sewn repair.
