Of large country house proportions the good Tabriz carpet in beautiful muted tones with a large central medallion with a spiral design of herati and secondary motifs with branches to flowers and palmettes, the central field having a blue background, and the intertwined borders typically busy and the whole surviving from the turn of the nineteenth century.

Object History

Unknown.

Object Literature

From the earliest times Tabriz has been one of the most important centres in the orient for the production of carpets. They were well known in the days of the Caliphs; and some of the earliest masterpieces that now remain were woven there. The pile often feels slightly hard because the water used by Tabriz rug dyers contains a lot of salt.

This is a splendid and scarce carpet in exactly the condition we like to find them in and it’s colours and large size make it an extremely attractive piece.

Object Condition

Some of the pile is thinning in areas but the overall effect is pleasing to those who favour antique pieces. There is some abrash to the central section of the carpet as photographed. There are no holes, tears or repairs.
