Object Description

Of superior colour, the good quality Regency period mahogany side table of classic proportions, the frieze incorporating a cockbeaded central drawer flanked by two dummy drawers, with later, though period, handles, the whole standing on ring turned legs.

Object History

Unknown.

Object Literature

The influences on Regency design and taste were legion; from Sheraton’s neoclassicism, Henry Holland’s Anglo-French taste, the Greek revival of Thomas Hope, and the Chinoiserie favoured by the Prince Regent, to an interest in the Gothic, Old English and rustic. The Regency attitude to interior decoration often involved treating each room as a unit with individual furnishings and wall decorations in harmony of theme or colour scheme.

A particularly elegant example. Classic, timeless beauty.

Object Condition

The condition of the table is truly country house with a well-established and evocative patina and deep colour. There are marks to the top including ring marks and ink stains, and two small running cracks, though nothing that compromises the piece, all part of the tapestry of its history. There is a small section of cockbeading missing from the central drawer, otherwise with no losses. The handles to the dummy drawers are later though true to the period of the piece.
