Object Description
A set of 9 chinese export gouaches of local idealised landscapes, each depicting waterside architectural settings each mounted in a gothic parcel gilt frame, with a label from Ursus books in New York.
Some of the great sights of China are the Water Townships. There are 8 around Shanghai alone, and many more in the rest of the country. One of the most famous is Zhouzhuang which claims to be over 1000 years old. These aquatic cities – like Venice – have been revered for centuries and thus it is no surprise that they became part of the currency of the China Trade.
