Object Description

The group of eight Italian school depictions of saints or apostles, each in a primitive manner in oils on panels and being unframed, the figures in their flowing robes, many holding books and each on forest green and blue grounds, marked verso with the corresponding apostles name and Christies stencil marks ‘BG007’, and surviving from the latter half of eighteenth-century provincial Italy.

Object History

Unknown. Christies stencil marks ‘BG007’.

Object Literature

The saints or apostles are marked to the reverses in pencil, with some of them being indecipherable though they include Saint Andrew and Saint Bartholomew. Further research would prove fruitful.

This group probably resided in a private chapel of a wealthy family in Italy and they may have been mounted as part of a larger composition as the edges are beveled suggesting they were once inserted into a larger mount.

As a set these have a real unified decorative power.

Object Condition

The paintings are all in sound overall order. There are some losses to the reverses of some of them with one having a hairline crack. Some have chipped marks to the surfaces, please refer to the photographs for a full visual reference. The surfaces have not been cleaned or restored in any way. There are stencil marks to the reverse of each also reading BG007 which are that of Christie’s auction house. This could be researched further with the archive department.
