Object Description

A Japanese meiji period carved wood and lacquer okimono of the famous flute player Fujiwara no Yasumasa, based on the wood block print by Yoshitoshi.

From our collection of Japanese, Meiji-era (1868-1912) wood carvings, this characterful Okimono group depicting the famous flute player Fujiwara no Yasumasa and the bandit, Hakamadare Yasusuke.

The scene is based on the wood-block print by Yoshitoshi.

As in the legend, the depiction of Fujiwara no Yasumasa is wearing elegant robes whilst the ferocious bandit, Hakamadare Yasusuke is preparing to wield his Katana.
