Object Description

From our collection of Japanese Meiji-era (1868-1912) metalwork, this dramatic Bronze Okimono depicting the legend of Tadatsune slaying the giant boar.

The legend took place during the Grand Hunting event Fuji no Makigari which was hosted by Shogun Minamoto no Yoritomo at the foot of Mount Fuji. Tadatsune was an attendant of the Shogun.

In this piece, the warrior is riding backwards on the raging boar, poised to deliver a fatal blow.
