Object Description

A Japanese Meiji Period (1868-1912) silver koro decorated with a wraparound design of multimetal carp among waterlilies, with a tortoise knop.

Object History

Tortoise

In Japan the tortoise symbolises longevity, good luck and support, it is the symbol of Kumpira the god of seafaring people.

Carp

Due to them being the only fish to conquer the waterfalls of the yellow river carp represent courage and strength in Japanese culture, the gift of a Koi carp is believed to grant the receiver great strength.

Object Condition

Condition – Excellent, some minor expected tarnishing to the silver which is easily removed if desired.
