Object Description
A rare opportunity to own a piece of furniture designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens.
This large chimneypiece was designed by Lutyens for Papillon Hall, Leicestershire in 1903. It is made of hand carved mahogany and has a beautiful patina. There is a deep mantle shelf above the fire surround and a servant’s bell to the right. The associated rouge marble bolection can be used/adapted. The house was demolished in 1951 and this chimneypiece has been privately owned ever since, after being rescued from the billiard room, for which it was made.
17th Century Papillon Hall was remodelled by Lutyens in 1903 along the lines of Chesters, a house Lutyens admired. Papillon had three principle wings, the salon, the dining room and the billiard room. As items like these would be prohibited from being removed today, this is a very rare example of a large scale work by Lutyens becoming available for sale.
Attached is Lutyens plan for the house, with the ‘Own’ Room, being in fact the Billiard Room. Country Life have kindly let use images from their archive of the house before it was demolished.
There are also a pair of pelmets being offered for sale separately, also rescued from this room in 1951.
