Object Description

The sarouk carpet of good size at over eleven feet long, having a terracotta field centred by a cruciform medallion surrounded by floral sprays, the whole enclosed by indigo borders of meandering vines and surviving from the second quarter of the twentieth century.

Object History

Unknown.

Object Literature

Sarouk (sometimes spelt Saroukh) is a city west of Kashan. They are fine, bold rugs with hard backs; and it’s not unusual to find them with breaks and tears because of this hardness. The colours are usually strong, contrasts great. They are made with a Sehna knot and are usually very fine. The Sarouk and Kashan may be distinguished from all others by their short velvety nap; dark rich colours; fields of graceful, foliated stalks and floral forms resting on concentric medallions; and the fine, firm texture of the weave.

A beautiful, nigh on antique, piece providing cracking value.

Object Condition

The piece shows wear consistent with age with one area of heavier wear and abrash as photographed. There are no holes or tears. It proves perfect for those of us that like a carpet to have shown their story thus far without being damaged.
