Object Description

From our collection of fine, Japanese Meiji-era (1868-1912) metalwork, this large striking multi metal charger. The dish is decorated in Gold, Silver, Copper, Shakudo and Shibuichi, with a bold dynamic depiction of the legendary Oho-I.

Oho-I was the wife of a Kendo master, they lived in a small rural homestead where Oho-I ran the house and tended to the animals. One day she was walking alone carrying two pails of goats milk, one on her head the other in her hand, when a swaggering ruffian thrust his hand under her arm to grope her.

Pressing her arm firmly to her side she gripped him and dragged him along without spilling a drop of the milk she was carrying, she then launched him into the river and carried on her merry way.
