Object Description
A large Louis XV style ormolu mounted marquetry table vitrine by Linke
French, Late 19th Century
Height 76cm, width 108cm, depth 67cm
In the Louis XV style, with floral marquetry design and hinged glass top, this excellent piece is a large ormolu mounted and marquetry table vitrine, with the bronze mount signed ‘F. Linke,’ for the great Parisian designer and maker. Linke is known for the outstanding individuality, creativity, and originality of his work, and this vitrine is no exception.
Carved in an exuberant floral manner, it is executed largely in a Louis XV style, though with Linke’s usual idiosyncrasies and embellishments, such as the shell-shaped mount on the front, for example. The large glass-top opens up to give access to a red velvet-lined interior. This piece is a number Linke made in this design, which is also the product of a fruitful partnership with the sculptor Léon Messagé, combining Linke’s exceptional craftsmanship with a high level of artistic flair and charm.
