Object Description

From our collection of fine Meiji-era metalware this Iron Koro of an archaic square form with a seated scholar to the top.

The body of the koro decorated with delicate patches of inlaid gold and silver damascene reminiscent of kimono patterns. The two main panels with decoration of sparrows among flowering clematis and lilies with a sparrowhawk hunting a grouse in bronze, copper, silver and gold.

The handles of this koro are of a striking bold design with delicate gold and silver damascene inlay of a stylised flowering clematis, the lid features bronze seated scholar, with a richly decorated robe with designs that echo the koro, he sits holding a fan his face raised to the heavens.

The koro is lined with Bronze.
