Object Description

The well-proportioned and lightweight pine bookcase having four shelves, the whole retaining the original faux-grained comb-work painted decoration to mimic quarter sawn oak, standing on bun front feet to rear stiles and surviving from the last quarter of the nineteenth century.

Object History

Unknown.

Object Literature

The family that originally owned this piece of furniture would have acquired it with the idea of it making them appear wealthier. Ironic now that currently you could argue that this type of surface is more prized commercially than, for instance, an oak bookcase of this period.

A decorative and useful barn find with a host of character.

Object Condition

The bookcase is in attic find condition and we have refrained from cleaning it, only giving it a dry brush. The finish is pleasing and decorative and there are no major losses. There are scratch marks to the paint; with one long one to one flank; please refer to the photographs for a full visual reference. The lower back has been cut out to fit to a skirting board architrave.
