Of spectacular scale, constructed from spelter and on a bronze-mounted veneered plinth, the striking orientalist figure of a woman dressed in Arabian fashion, her flowing garb and headdress rendered with billowing folds, with hoop earrings and a necklace retaining col-painted polychrome details, the figure perched on the edge of a small table as she holds a feather fan in her right hand, a monumental twin-handled vase towering next to her with exquisite decoration on the surface of geometric motifs and calligraphy.

Louis Hottot (1834-1906)

Hottot specialised in Orientalist scenes and figures, and many of his works were produced in spelter rather than the more traditional bronze. His workshop in Paris producing so-called ‘bronzes d’imitation’ was first mentioned in 1863. He participated at the Paris exposition universelle of 1867, and later exhibited at the yearly Paris Salons from 1885 until 1898.
