Object Description

From our collection of fine Japanese ceramics of Meiji-period Japan, (1868-1912) this magnificent Satsuma vase signed Sozan.

Thee vase featuring two main panels, one a classical scene of a temple surrounded by lakes and mountains and the other, a highly complex scene of a flock of many species of birds. These include red crowned Cranes, a Hawk, several Chickens, Egrets, Mandarin Ducks, Wood Pigeons, Oriental Turtle Doves, Taiga Bean Goose, Sparrowhawks, Green pheasants and the Common Crame.

On a rust-red ground with Autumnal coloured leaves and tall thin panels of flowing Golden Wisteria on a Teal ground.

Signed Sozan to the panels and Kinkozan to the underside.
