Object Description

Constructed in gilt bronze, and dressed with Bleu Celeste framed porcelain panels, decorated in polychromes, in the ‘Sevres’ manner, with swags, foliates and putti; rising from toupie feet, the bow ended plaque inset breakfront plinth base has two gilt putti with musical instruments over, flanking a spandrel flanked case, supporting a circular white enamel dial. the hours marked with Roman numerals, the arched surmount with flambeaux type finials, swags, with a portrait medallion atop. The twin train 8 day movement, with the hours striking on a bell is signed ‘Raingo Freres’.

Object Literature

Raingo Freres, a company founded in 1813 by Zacharie Raingo, and later run by his four sons, had premises in Paris in rue de Cléry, rue Vielle du Temple and from 1840-50 in the rue de Saintonge. They operated, on a large scale, as quality clockmakers and bronziers, and also made orreries, astronomical clocks, and movements, and enjoyed Royal patronage. Exhibitors and medal winners at various international exhibitions including the 1862 Great London Exposition.
