Object Description

A Massive Silver Gilt Sideboard Dish
By Robert Garrard II

A splendid circular sideboard dish with a broad border, finely repoussé and chased in high relief with an intricate array of flowers, fruit, and foliage on a rich matted ground, all enclosed within a moulded rim. The hexafoil well is outlined with beadwork and foliage strapwork at intervals, the centre bearing an engraved coat of arms within elaborate mantling. The reverse marked with the Garrard maker’s mark and bearing the retailer’s stamp, ‘Garrards, Panton Street, London.’ The hallmark corresponding to the year 1833.
English, 1833

Weight: 11.42 lb / 166.54 troy oz.

The arms belong to the distinguished Fellowes family, quartering Benyon, and commemorate William Henry Fellowes, Esq. (1769-1837) of Ramsey Abbey, Huntingdon, Member of Parliament for Haverland, and his wife, Emma, the fourth daughter of Richard Benyon, Esq., of Englefield House, Berkshire, whom he married in 1805.  He commissioned John Soane to alter and enlarge the family house and its entrance at Ramsey.

Their legacy continued notably through their second son, Edward, who was later elevated to Baron de Ramsey, and their third son, who in 1854 adopted the surname Benyon by royal license, inheriting the estates of his maternal uncle, Richard Benyon de Beauvoir of Englefield House, Berkshire.
