Object Description

The French provincial circular oak and leather topped vendange or wine tasting table, having a flip action top supported on a baluster column with cross stretcher to tripod splayed legs, the original leather hide covered top displaying an extraordinary patina, the oak of superb colour, and the whole surviving in very original condition from the third quarter of nineteenth century France.

Object History

Unknown.

Object Literature

Vendange is the French term for grape harvest and this table originates from a French vineyard where wine would be tested as it was produced during harvest time.

Transports one immediately to the sunny grapevines of France.

Object Condition

The table has obviously been well cherished and the patina is simply stunning with the leather having an all over craquelure and a variation of plum and chestnut colourings. This type of table always sees some looseness and movement to the top due to the mechanism but she can still be used daily and she is structurally sound throughout. There are some later additions to the underside of the top, just to give it more stability.
