Object Description

The large and well-proportioned wingback armchair in the George II style, having moulded chamfered straight oak block legs united by a stretcher, scrolled arms and a good shaped and flared winged back with central hump, the whole in oxblood leather with hobnail detailing and surviving from the second quarter of twentieth century England.

Object History

Unknown.

Object Literature

The original purpose of the flared wings in wing backed armchairs were understood to be to prevent drafts in old houses from reaching ones upper body or to protect the delicate skin of gentrified ladies from the heat of a roaring fire.

A very comfortable and roomy armchair with bags of character.

Object Condition

The condition of the armchair remains useable and it has a lot of timeworn charm. There are two areas as photographed where the underlay is showing. It proves comfortable and aside from the two top arm areas there are no other rips, tears or punctures. Some of the buttons to the seat are lacking.
