Object Description

A Musical Automaton Clock
Depicting Napoleon at Fontainebleau

Based on the original work of Horace Vernet “Goodbyes at Fontainebleau,” the painted canvas fitted with a circular enamelled clock face with Roman numerals, connected to a twin train movement and a music box, fitted within a French empire style giltwood frame.
French, circa 1830

Several versions of “Les adieux de Fontainebleau, 20 avril 1814” based on Vernet’s are known, including one residing at the Château de Versailles. Standing in the courtyard of Fontainebleau, the Emperor is saying his final goodbyes following his abdication on his way to the island of Elba. Napoleon would return to France within the year and resume his leadership.
