The Spinario, or boy removing a thorn form his foot, is a celebrated if much debated copy after the antique bronze i.e. from the Roman period. The vignette possibly celebrates a Shepherd boy called Martius who bore a message to the Roman Senate with such diligence, that only after the message was safely delivered did he look to remove a thorn from his foot.
