Object Description

The twentieth century attic-style bell crater vases, each painted in the Ancient Greek manner, having loop handles to domed circular bases and surviving from the mid-century in good decorative condition.

Object History

Unknown.

Object Literature

Around 625-600 B.C.E., Athens adopted the black-figure technique (i.e., dark-colored figures on a light background with incised detail). Originating in Corinth almost a century earlier, black-figure uses the silhouette manner in conjunction with added colour and incision. The overall attractive quality of Greek vases, their relatively small size, and—at one point in time—their easily obtainable nature, led them to be highly coveted collector’s items during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

Instantaneous Greek mythological style.

Object Condition

The condition of the vases is good throughout with no losses. They have been made to appear aged so the areas of wear were cleverly created at the time of creation.
