Object Description

A Fine Pair of Patinated Bronze Allegorical Busts of Autumn and Summer By Pierre-Louis Détrier.

French, Circa 1890.

Finely modelled and cast, the busts depict young maidens allegorical of Summer and Autumn; Summer with rose blossom in her hair, Autumn with oak leaves. Each bust is raised on a gilt-bronze socle and a grey granite column.

Pierre Loius Détrier was born in Vougecourt (Haute-Savoie) on the 25th July 1822 and studied under the French Sculptor Paul Joseph Raymond (1807-1855).

He exhibited bronzes regularly at the salon from 1866 to 1886 inlcuding: ‘Ulysse reconnu par Penelope’ (1870, ‘L’innocence et l’Amittie’ (1875), ‘Le Caprice (1879)’, ‘Amour Maternel (1883)’, ‘Jeune Fille au Nid’ (1887) , ‘Les Gaudes 1890’, ‘Grand Souer (1892)’ and ‘Amateur Louis XVI’ (1896).

Working in a variety of media including bronze, clay and marble, Détrier created sculptures in the eclectic styles of the period, from classical Greek portraits to ethnographical Orientalist works. He also sculpted charming animalier and genre subjects.

As well as creating his own works Détrier established successful partnerships with a number of successful sculptors and makers including Maison Raingo Freres and Emile Hébert.
