Object Description

This pair of multi-metal vases show Nocturnal scenes with Owls and Hawks resting on the branches of an acer tree in front of a Full Moon.

Signed with the Nogawa mark.

Object History

Hawk

The hawk is traditionally a symbol of nobility and wealth, due to the expense of training and caring for the birds.

Moon

The moon is the subject of much mythology in Japan, it’s depiction can symbolize national well-being (From Shinto beliefs) or inner enlightenment (Buddhist beliefs)

Acer

Acer or Japanese maple is a symbol of strength and endurance, it is often used in the art of Bonsai and it is traditional to go to view the changing colours of the leaves in Autumn, much like the cherry blossom is viewed in the spring.

Owl

In Japan the owl is a symbol of good fortune and luck.

Nogawa

The Nogawa factory and workshops were active in the Meiji Period (1868-1912) through to the early 20th century. They created many works to appeal to Western tastes and used many different metal-ware techniques.
