Object Description
A pair of bronze standing figures of Spanish explorer and Conquistador, Hernan Cortes, by CharlesCumberworth, shown wearing different suits of armour, each with a shaped breastplate, a ruff, pantaloons, a short sword and an abundantly feathered domed helmet, in one he holds a musket in his left hand and in the other a pike in his right. French, circa 1840.
Footnote: Charles Cumberworth (1811-1852), the son of an English army officer and his French wife, was born in Paris. After studying there, at the École des Beaux-Arts under of James Pradier, he exhibited from 1833 to 1848 at the Salon, frequently showing classical female figures.
