Object Description

A Pair of Hand-Carved Neo-Classical Jardinières
By Lenygon & Abbot

The design derived from the ancient Roman sarcophagus, these carved planters are supported on lion’s paw feet, the oval fluted bodies dressed with Lion’s masks.
Circa 1920

The Lion Mask holding a ring in its mouth derives from Ancient Roman furniture and architecture. In use since Antiquity and re-gaining popularity in the Georgian period, the Lion mask represents strength, courage, and majesty.
