Object Description
A pair of large majolica ewers by Wilhelm Schiller und Söhne
Bohemian, Late 19th Century
Height 45cm, width 23cm, depth 18cm
With spouts formed as upturned shells, moulded masks with issue forth eagle-head and serpent tail handles, these fine majolica ewers were made by the Bohemian firm, Wilhelm Shiller & Sons, which was founded in 1829. The shoulders are applied with hippocampi and mermaids which emerge from an undulating set of waves, while the lower parts and main bodies of the ewers are moulded with flowers and foliage. The ewers are marked ‘WS&S’ and numbered ’78.’
