Object Description

The two academic studies of the male form; painted in oils on canvas and depicting two differing male nude models of middle age, each un-stretched and in simple frames, surviving from the latter stages of nineteenth century France.

Object History

Unknown.

Object Literature

The palettes used here prove wonderfully effective for this subject matter, the swirling sea foam green backgrounds have a misty and atmospheric feel and the studies themselves are well proportioned, the contrast of one subject facing dexter and the other downward, provides a nice contrast.

Immediately arresting and hugely decorative works that balance each other out wonderfully well.

Object Condition

In entirely untouched and original condition the studies have been executed in oils on linen canvas supports which are unlined. The pictures appear to have been stored rolled up for a long time causing the horizontal creases and raised paint. There are a handful of small holes and losses to the paint layer across the surface but nothing of major concern. The paintings are sandwiched between the hardboard and Perspex in the frame. They could of course be re-framed.
