Object Description

The attractive pair of opposing terracotta recumbent lions by Orr & Morris of Bolton, England, for positioning either side of an entrance way or mantlepiece, each with beautifully textured surfaces with remnants of old paint layers, stylised in the naïve manner with flowing manes and paws to stepped plinth bases, surviving from the last quarter of the nineteenth century.

Object Literature

Orr and Morris’s works were sited near Radcliffe Bridge station, Bolton. The works operated between 1870 and 1891.

Best elevated, a charming pair with superb texture and by a relatively unknown maker.

Object Condition

The lions are in good overall condition aside from one obvious loss to a corner to one of the examples and loss to a nose as photographed. The complete one is stamped with makers name inside ‘Orr and Morris Nr Bolton’.
