Object Description
A Pair of Louis XVI Period Gilt-Bronze and Marble Three-Light Figural Candelabra.
Modelled as partially robed classical maidens. One with a floral posy at her feet, representing Sping, and the other with a buddle of wheat, representing summer. The figure holds a candelabrum which is intricately modelled with spirally-cast and flower trailing branches around a pomegranate finial. The base of bleu turquin (Dove Grey) marble with chain hung medallions atop on neoclassical socles and square bases.
France, Circa 1780.
Finely sculpted and exceptionally detailed these exquisite candelabra exhibit chased bronzework and mercury gilding of the first order. The female figures themselves are attributed to the sculptor Etienne-Maurice Falconet (1716-91) and the bronzework to the ‘fondeur-ciseleur’ Jean-François Forty (fl.1775-1790).
