Object Description

A Pair of Mahogany Serving or Side Tables in the George III Chinoiserie Manner, c.1900

Of rectangular shape with the overhanging tops supported on a frieze with blind chinoiserie fretwork concealing a full length drawer. The four square sectioned legs with panelled profiles and further chinoiserie ornament. The table stands on stylised guttae feet in the Chinese Chippendale manner.

The tables are veneered in high quality mahogany, the tops utilising flamed timber of impressive figure.

These fine tables are based on George III period serving tables and were probably designed to be used in a grand early 20th century dining room at the height of the 20th century Chippendale revival. Given the quality of the pieces they were probably made by one of the leading London manufacturers such as Warring and Gillows, Maple and Co. or possibly one of the dealers who sold antiques and pieces inspired by those older pieces such as Gill and Reigate and Lenygon and Morant.

In the modern interior these tables are as likely to be used as side tables in a hallway or drawing room as they are in a dining room setting, the restrained ornament and elegant proportions making them highly adaptable pieces.
