Object Description

The cast reconstituted stone panthers of large size, sejant on rectangular bases, both facing to dexter, having been black painted and now nicely timeworn with age, each with muscular bodies and snarling expressions, and surviving from the third quarter of the twentieth century.

Object History

Unknown.

Object Literature

It is believed that black panthers would have been high status, valued creatures in ancient Egypt due to their rarity and depictions of leopards or panthers are found on some of the earliest ritual objects from ancient Egypt. The panther was also a common motif during the art deco era, signifying power and elegance.

A twist on the traditional lions, these big cats would certainly flank a garden path or entryway with authority.

Object Condition

Although they both have losses to their lower jaws, as photographed, they still retain nicely detailed faces, the wholes weathered with age and exposure to the elements with some charming lichen deposits; please refer to the photographs. They were more than likely painted at least twenty years ago but wouldn’t have been painted at the time they were made. The same corners to each base has been cut down probably to fit into a porch corner, with some of the aperture now showing.
