A Pair of Ormolu-Mounted Bedside Commodes
By Fernand Kohl of Paris

Constructed from mahogany and having their original breccia marble tops, the bombé bedside cabinets dressed with foliate ormolu mounts to the corners and a central gilt bronze scallop shell and foliate cartouche to the hinged door, opening to reveal a marble-lined interior, with a frieze drawer above; the cabriole legs terminating in foliate cast sabots. Stamped ‘Kohl.’

Kohl of Paris (fl. 1876 – 1910)

Fernand Kohl, situated at 55 Rue Traversiere, exhibited and obtained a bronze medal in the Paris Exhibition Universelle, in 1889, and is recorded in Denise LeDoux-LeBard’s ‘Dictionnaire des Ebenistes et Menuisiers de le XIXth Siecle’ published by Editions de l’Amateur, in 1989.
