Object Description
A pair of Victorian gem set butterfly brooches. A pair of brooches, set to the bodies with a cushion shape old mine natural unenhanced fancy colour pink diamond in an open back grain and rubover setting with a weight of 0.10 carats, additionally set with three cushion shape old mine natural unenhanced fancy colour cinnamon diamonds in open back grain and rubover settings with a combined weight of 0.45 carats, and punctuated by four cushion shape old mine diamonds in open back grain and rubover settings with a combined weight of 0.08 carats, the wings set with thirty two cushion shape old cut natural unenhanced rubies in open back grain and rubover settings with an approximate combined weight of 1.60 carats, also decorated with four rectangular emerald-cut natural emeralds with no colour enhancement in open back rubover settings with a combined weight of 0.40 carats, set throughout with one hundred and seventy two round rose cut diamonds in closed back grain settings with a combined weight of 1.72 carats, the eyes composed of four round rose cut natural emeralds with no colour enhancement in closed back rubover settings with a combined weight of 0.04 carats. The total approximate diamond weight is 2.35 carats, the total approximate emerald weight is 0.44 carats, to a finely modeled butterfly brooch, with scalloped wings, legs and antennae issuing from the central diamond set body, intricately pierced with fancy backholing, fitted to reverse with a secure pin and scroll clasp and with additional safety chain and pin, each approximately 2.4cm in length. Tested yellow gold, English, circa 1890.
