Object Description
Depicting a young couple in dance, the gentleman teaching the lady, signed ‘A. Gaudez’, with title plaque to the front ‘Leçon de Danse’ (Dance Lesson)
Guadez was born in Lyon and entered the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in 1862 where he was taught by the renowned sculpture Francois Jouffroy. A few years later he exhibited at the Salon. Noticed for his unique talent, he continued to exhibit his work in public exhibitions and won gold medals at the Expositions Universelles of 1889 and 1890, and was also awarded the Legion d’Honneur in 1893, a few years before his death. The subjects of his works comprised a variety of subjects from mythological figures to literary characters.
