Object Description
From our collection of Japanese Meiji-era (1868 – 1912) Okimono, this characterful black-patinated Bronze Okimono of Daruma. Unusual among Japanese depictions of the Zen master, this is a serious composition rather than the usual humorous take on Daruma. He is seated with a stern expression on his face. A “hossu” (fly swatter) rests on his lap, an embalm of Zen Buddhism. The figure, with a rich, black patination has gold ring eyes and gold hoop ear-rings.
