Object Description
A rare late 19th century New Zealand jewellery box by Evan Rees of Christchurch, finely made in richly figured native timber, likely burr kauri. The rectangular box displays exceptionally well-matched figuring to all sides and retains a pleasing warm patina.
The hinged lid opens to a well-preserved interior lined in original red and black marbled paper, with original hinges and lock plate. The quality of workmanship reflects the high standard of cabinetmaking achieved in Christchurch during this period.
Jewellery boxes by known New Zealand makers are rare, and examples of this quality are particularly scarce. A fine and collectible example of late 19th century colonial craftsmanship.
