Object History

Unknown.

Object Literature

Poliomyelitis or Polio is a highly infectious viral disease which attacks the nervous system and, once contracted, can lead to total paralysis within a few hours. To date, there is no cure for polio and it typically affected children, but adults were not immune. It became a major public health issue in late Victorian times with major epidemics in Europe and the United States.

If you have an imagination, then this piece tells a sad but important story and this is now a standalone museum worthy sculptural piece with a real evocative aura.

Object Condition

The condition of the brace is thoroughly charming with the leather showing signs of obvious wear commensurate with use and age. We haven’t cleaned or oiled them as they are best preserved and presented as found.
