Object Description

A Rare Fauteuil de Bureau
In the Louis XV Style
By François Linke

An armchair of beautifully drawn proportions, constructed from purpleheart and adorned with fine hand-chased and fire-gilded bronze mounts, the upholstered shaped backrest surmounted by a bearded ormolu mask, the open scrolled armrests meeting the padded seat, the chair standing on curved cabriole legs with ormolu foliate cast sabots and dressed with stylised ormolu acanthus to the knees, one of which is signed ‘F. Linke.’

According to Christopher Payne, furniture historian and author of the definitive volume on François Linke, this armchair is a variation of index no. 840 & no. 1333. Both iterations are based on the same frame design and were finished with varying ormolu mounts.
