Object Description

The elegant and rather unusual mahogany gentleman’s towel stand or rail showing a nice patina, the frame with a T-shaped cresting, on a turned domed stand with a lead weighted base, the whole surviving from the first quarter of nineteenth century England.

Object History

Unknown.

Object Literature

This was likely to have stood next to the washstand with the barbers dressing mirror, perhaps for assistance in the washing and drying of the face before and after the shave for instance. One usually sees towel stands as much larger pieces with several co-joined rails, and this one has a nice elegance to it as a smaller standalone piece, which would work well in a smart bathroom.

Rather hard to find in this elegant form, this is a beautifully made piece of useful period furniture.

Object Condition

The condition of the stand is nicely un-meddled with and thus entirely original, with some expected wear to the finish in places, more so to the top, as you would expect giving a solid overall aged patination. The leaded base is original.
