Object Description
A Sevres style giltwood and porcelain mounted guéridon
French, Late 19th Century
78.5cm high x 85cm in diameter.
Crafted in late 19th century France, this charming and beautiful guéridon is made from lavishly ornate carved giltwood, and is mounted with painted porcelain, in superb Sevres style. Pieces such as these are often commemorative in nature, with a singular large portrait in the centre made out to the dedicatee, with portraits of family members for example set in the outer ovals.
In this work, on the other hand, the central space is occupied by a charming genre scene, which lends the piece far more potential as a decorative object for personal enjoyment. The giltwood is sumptuously carved and adorned with floral and geometric scrolling motifs, and the calming genre scene, with a musician in a country setting performing for a small audience including a young noble woman is wonderfully executed.
