Object Description
Featuring a tapered design with multiple reinforced rings including astragals and fillets. It terminates in a rounded cascabel at the breech and a flared muzzle. The upper surface of the barrel is decorated with a raised cast relief scroll containing the inscription LE TONNANT, referring to the French 80-gun ship-of-the-line launched in 1789 and later captured by the British. The barrel is supported by integral trunnions held by black-finished metal caps. The four-wheeled naval truck carriage is of stepped construction, crafted from quarter-sawn oak displaying prominent medullary rays. It is fitted with black-finished hardware, including breeching loops and metal-headed studs to the solid wooden wheels. The assembly includes a functional wooden quoin for adjusting barrel elevation.
